This school year, we've introduced an exciting new feature that lets you to take attendance easily and creatively with Flipd. This feature takes some flipped and blended learning strategies that help engage students as class begins.
How It Works
At the beginning of class, students must Flip Off their phones in order to Check In on the Flipd app. Once they have Flipd Off their device for class, students can check in with a unique Attendance Code that they must submit through the Flipd lock screen.
Students will not be permitted to leave Flipd in order to check in, ensuring that students will not be using their phones to find the attendance code or texting their friends to get it. Ultimately, this solution helps encourage collaboration among peers and gets students to unplug and talk to each other.
Creating Attendance Codes
Within each Class on your Flipd Dashboard, there is a section called Attendance Codes. These are codes, or answer keys, that you can can add based on your course, lesson, or anything you like.
When you first create your class, you'll notice that the codes are already pre-populated with words that are relative to the Class Category you selected.
The Sample Class (Flipd 101) above, for example, is an Astronomy course, and the pre-populated attendance codes are therefore related to Astronomy. You can leave the attendance codes as they are, or you can change any code to anything you like. For example, the attendance code of the day could be the answer to a homework question, a math equation, a movie title, or the weather report — it's up to you.
Changing Your Attendance Codes
From the dashboard, select Class List > My Classes (1), and select the class you would like to view. Next, select Attendance Codes (2) and change your view to the correct month (3) you wish to be viewing. The list of attendance codes for all classes that occur during that month will appear and you can edit each one by simply typing into the text field (4) where the pre-populated codes already are.
If you change any codes, be sure to click Save Changes (5) before leaving the screen.
Using Your Attendance Codes in Class: Active Participation
Students will need to know what the attendance code is in order to Check In successfully. But instead of writing a code on the board or posting it in your lecture slides, we recommend using this opportunity to challenge students with a question that gets them to review their notes or to have read this lesson's chapter. Students can then collaborate as class is beginning in order to figure out what the attendance code of the day could be, making it a great way to encourage active participation from the onset of the lecture.
