Need a break from your phone or social media? Looking for an app that will lock you out of your phone so that you can study, sleep, or daydream in peace? You've come to the right place, my friend.
"I have never reviewed an app before but this app has literally changed my life."
- happy user (App Store review)
It might sound like a bit of a joke: use your phone to use your phone less. We get it — but ironic as it may be, the science behind Flipd suggests that there's nothing to laugh about this highly effective study app and wellness tool.
But don't just take our word for it — Google one of the hundreds of articles written about Flipd including those from...

How Flipd Works
Flipd works like a lock screen on a timer that encourages you to remain unplugged from your phone for a period of time that you choose. Whether you're using the app to study, pay attention in class, or even sleep, Flipd helps you disconnect and measures your mindful progress each time you use it.
Full Lock Mode
This infamous feature is not for the faint-hearted: the Full Lock literally hides your apps from you until the timer ends. Enable the Full Lock and distractions disappear for the time that you've selected, reappearing again when the time is complete. We promise it's as magical as it sounds.
"I don’t know what kind of voodoo magic the Flipd folks work on my phone when it goes into full lock mode, but it’s exactly what I need."
- another happy user (App Store review)
The Full Lock is great if you're using Flipd to take a break from social media and games but you'd rather not have to uninstall each one by one. Use the Full Lock if you want to take a break from:
- Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, and pretty much all social media
- News (both real and fake)
If you use your phone for other productivity apps, keep in mind that Flipd will hide those too. But there's no need to panic — incoming calls are still accessible, and some default apps (like Message, Phone and calculator) remain accessible during the Full Lock, too.
These suggested moments are there to nudge you toward spending your time more mindfully — plus it's the ultimate test of your self-control. Mindful Moments include the following default suggestions:
- Study — 1 hour
- Work — 4 hours
- My Day — 12 hours
- Sleep — 8 hours
- Custom — custom selection + tag
will enable a mode that motivates you stay off of your phone for the time you selected, but it still lets you use your phone if you really want to. If you begin a Mindful Moment and give up before it's finished, Flipd will remind you that you're close to failing, and whether you failed or succeeded at the end of your session.
The Light Lock feature is best used when you're setting a goal for yourself and would like to measure how long you're able to stay off of your phone based on that goal.
Flipd180 — Our Recommended Daily Dose
Research suggests that spending 3 hours a day intentionally off your phone can create positive benefits to your mental wellbeing. When you spend time off your phone, you're free to allocate that time to other things that make you happy, productive, and present — like reading a book, spending quality time with others, going for a walk, exercising, pursuing a hobby, or just embracing boredom. When you're not persuaded to check and scroll, you're more likely to Flip Off and enjoy reality.
Look how easy it is to achieve 3 hours intentionally offline in a day:
- 30-minutes in the morning
- 1 hour during lunch
- 30-minute commute or walk
- 1 hour in the evening
Flipd180 is our take on Fitbit's 10,000 steps — a daily goal that's achievable if you try just a little bit. Most of us experience many mindful moments throughout our day, but it's those intentional moments that make a big difference.
Create a Schedule
With Flipd, you can easily create a schedule to stay on top of your #TimeWellSpent. With each new schedule, you'll receive a push notification to Flip Off for your scheduled time. Schedules can occur weekly or daily, and they're useful if you want to get into the habit of disconnecting from your phone intentionally, or taking a break from social media regularly.
Create your schedule around times you plan to be studying, sleeping, or even at work and keep track of your progress in your Flipd stats.
Flipd For Class
Flipd for Class invites students to Flip Off at the same time as their classmates. This feature uses the same technology as the Flipd Light Lock, permitting you to set a goal and track your progress each time you Flip Off.
Educators using Flipd to improve engagement can keep track of their classes and award credits to students who Flip Off successfully. Learn more about using Flipd for class here.
The Science Behind Why Flipd Works: Nudge Yourself to Stay On Task
Flipd is really like a digital nudge that discourages you from checking your phone. In behavioral economics, a nudge is a small but meaningful experience that can influence positive behavior and help you make better decisions. With Flipd, you're reminding yourself that it's time to go off the grid, and you're nudging yourself to stay off your phone if (and when) you get distracted.
If you've experienced an irrestible urge to check Instagram 10 minutes into your study session, or you mean to check the time during class and wind up replying to text messages, using Flipd can help reshape this type of behavior so that you're less likely to experience these urges and become less easily distracted. By developing better behavior and reshaping bad habits, you're building skills that your future self will be thankful for.
